SUE RYDER “STARLIGHT HIKE”, 3rd OCTOBER 2026

The annual Starlight Hike, a 5k or 10k night-time walk under the stars organised by the Sue Ryder charity, took place on Saturday, 3rd October 2026 at Everard Meadow, Longholme Way, Bedford.

As part of our Community Engagement efforts, the Province provided 35 volunteers, made up of freemasons, their wives, partners, family and friends. We were tasked with organising the car parking, assisting with setting up the event, and marshalling the route – which started at Everard Meadow, and then went in a loop over Longholme Bridge, along the north side of the Embankment, through Russell park, under the Town Bridge, down to (and across) Country Bridge, then back to the start & finish line along the south side of the Embankment.

Just under 300 participants (and several dogs!), all sporting their Sue Ryder teeshirts and decorated with brightly coloured flashing lights, walked the route enthusiastically and with good humour. Our volunteer marshals, easily spotted in their “Bedfordshire Freemasons” hi-viz vests, guided and cheered along the participants with a smile and words of encouragement.

The organisers provided musical entertainment throughout, and refreshments were available via a bar and a number of mobile food outlets.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all, and we understand that the vent will have raised approximately £50,000 for the Sue Ryder charity.

Community Engagement at events like these shows that freemasons are able to assist the community in other ways than just fundraising – giving of our time is every bit as valuable.
